Step 1: Preparation
The process starts with confirming your income meets the D7 requirements and gathering the necessary documents (criminal record, proof of income, health insurance, etc.). Step 2: Consulate Appointment and Submission
You book an appointment at the Portuguese Consulate in your country of residence — waiting times can range from weeks to months at some consulates, so it pays to plan early. At the appointment you submit your documents, pay the application fee, and are usually interviewed briefly.
Step 3: Consulate Review
Consulate processing typically takes 30-90 days. If approved, a D7 entry visa valid for 4 months (120 days) is placed in your passport — this is your window to enter Portugal and start the residence permit process.
Step 4: The AIMA Appointment in Portugal
