Who Qualifies for the D7 Visa? General Requirements

Who is the D7 Visa designed for, and what are the core requirements? What to know before you apply.

Who Is the D7 Visa For?

The D7 Visa is a Portuguese residence visa designed for non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens who have a regular passive income from outside Portugal. Typical applicants include retirees, landlords earning rental income, and people living off dividends, interest, or intellectual property royalties.

Although it's often called the 'retirement visa', you don't need to be retired — what matters is that your income comes from a passive, not an active, source.

Core Requirements

Applicants must be over 18, hold a clean criminal record, provide proof of accommodation in Portugal (a lease or property deed), and hold adequate health insurance.

You'll also need to open a Portuguese bank account for your application file. Millennium Bank and Novo Banco are among the banks that allow Turkish citizens to open an account remotely, so this step can be completed while you're still in Turkey.

The most critical requirement is a regular, documentable passive income. See our article on financial requirements for the exact amounts and accepted income sources.

What the D7 Visa Gives You

Unlike many other passive-income residence visas, the D7 also grants the right to work and run a business in Portugal. It grants an initial 2-year residence permit, renewable for another 3 years, and can lead to long-term residence and, eventually, citizenship.

Next Step

If you believe you meet the general requirements, the next step is to confirm whether your income meets the current financial thresholds. Fill out our free pre-assessment form and we'll get back to you.
