How to Get Your NIF (A Mandatory First Step Before You Apply)
The NIF is your Portuguese tax number, and it must be obtained from Turkey — before your D7 application, not after.
What Is the NIF?
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a 9-digit tax identification number issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority. It's required for almost everything in Portugal — from opening a bank account and signing a lease, to applying for the D7 visa or getting a phone plan.
Why It Must Be Obtained Before You Travel
Opening the bank account and signing the lease you need for your D7 application are both impossible without a NIF. That's why it's one of the very first steps in the process — completed while you're still in Turkey.
Non-EU citizens can usually get a NIF through a fiscal representative, without traveling to Portugal in person. This significantly speeds up the process.
How the Process Works
You apply through a fiscal representative with a copy of your passport and residential details; your NIF number is usually issued within a few business days. We handle this on your behalf as part of our D7 Journey service.
