What Is the NISS, and How Is It Different From the NIF?
The NISS (Número de Identificação da Segurança Social) is your identification number in Portugal's social security system. The NIF is for tax matters; the NISS is used for social security, accessing certain benefits, and (if you work) employment matters — the two are issued by different authorities and serve different purposes.
When Should You Get One?
Unlike the NIF, the NISS is usually obtained after you've settled in Portugal and your residence status is confirmed. It's not strictly required for D7 visa holders, but it's useful for making full use of the SNS and if you're considering working or freelancing later on.
How to Apply
You apply at your local Segurança Social office with your passport, residence card, and NIF document; some regions also offer an online appointment system. The process is typically completed within a few weeks.

Your NISS number will be the system's core reference for you whenever you want to start a business, work, or access certain social benefits in Portugal in the future.
