Enrolling Your Child in School in Portugal
Public school or international school? How does enrollment work, and when's the deadline?
Public School or International School?
Public schools in Portugal are free, but instruction is in Portuguese, so your child may need an adjustment period. International and private schools generally offer English or bilingual instruction, but monthly fees vary significantly by school and level.
The Enrollment Window
Enrollment for the school year starting in September usually takes place between March and May. Missing this window can make it harder to secure a place at either public or preferred private schools.
Documents You'll Need
You'll generally need proof of income/residence, your child's ID/passport, and vaccination records. Enrollment can be done online via Portal das Matrículas, or directly at the school.
