What Counts as Passive Income? Accepted Income Types

The D7 Visa interprets 'passive income' very strictly. Here's what counts — and what doesn't.

Why Passive Income Matters So Much

One of the most common reasons D7 applications are rejected is that the income presented isn't considered 'passive'. Portuguese authorities interpret this term strictly: even a remote-work salary, despite being earned outside Portugal, does not qualify for the D7.

Accepted Income Sources

Pensions, rental/real estate income, dividends and interest, investment returns, and royalties from intellectual property are accepted as passive income. These sources need to be regular, documentable, and sustainable.

Income That Doesn't Qualify — or Is Risky

Remote-work salaries, active freelance income, and irregular one-off payments are not directly accepted for the D7. If this describes your income, a different visa category — such as the D2 entrepreneur visa or the D9 visa — may be a better fit.

Mixed Income Situations

Many applicants have a mix of passive and active income. How you present the file — which income you lead with — matters a great deal in these cases. If you're unsure how your income would be classified, it's worth reviewing your situation with us before you apply.
