SNS: Registering with the Public Health System
How do you register with Portugal's public health system, SNS, and what documents do you need?
What Is the SNS?
The SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde) is Portugal's public healthcare system. Once your residence permit is approved and you have a registered address, you can register at your local health center (Centro de Saúde) to receive an SNS user number.
What You Need to Register
Typically your passport/residence card, NIF document, and proof of address (lease, utility bill, etc.) are enough. Some regions require an appointment, while others accept walk-in registration.
SNS and Your Private Insurance
The private health insurance you used for your D7 application can still be useful for a while after you register with the SNS — appointment waiting times in some regions can be long, so many people keep both in place during the first period.
Getting Assigned a Family Doctor
Once registered, you may need to wait a while before being assigned a family doctor (médico de família); this waiting time varies by region.
